Brij Mohan was born in Urapar, India. Urapar is a small town about 20-25km North-North-East of Ludhiana and just North of the river Sutlej in the State of Punjab ("the Land of the 5 rivers"), located in North-Western India.
The family lived in Urapar (1934-1937) and then moved closer to the City of Allahabad (1937-1951) at the confluence of the Holy Rivers Ganga (Ganges) and Yamuna.
After that Brij commenced his Engineering Studies at the Kanchrapara University in Kolkata (Calcutta, 1951-1955). He then left for Germany to continue his various courses and gain some practical experience.
In Germany he stayed at the following locations: Geestach, Hamm, Hagen, Reutlingen, Heilbronn and Esslingen am Neckar (1955-1958). It is during his stay in Reutlingen and his work at a company called 'Gustav Wagner', that he met his future wife: Gertraud Burkhardt. They fell in love!
His tenure in Germany came to an end and he returned back to work for the Indian Railways in Kanpur (1958-1961).
Gertraud followed him to India in November 1959 and was greeted by him at the Port of Mumbai (Bombay). They proceeded on from there via Train on a long journey land inwards to Kanpur.
A clash of cultures was inevitable. Gertraud was from the West and the Sharma family from the East (i.e. India) - Brij Mohan was stuck in between and found it harder and harder to bridge the gaps ... besides, the time had come to part from his father Amar Chand and create his own family.
The latter eventually resulted in his move from Kanpur to New Delhi, where he stayed with his wife from 1961 onwards. The later had two children.
Brij - as he was lovingly called - passed away in New Delhi on 28th of August, 2004. | Lal, Brij Mohan (I23)
